Alaska Sablefish is also known as black cod, and well known locally in China as black pearl. Its body is smooth and slender, with a uniform gray to black color on top with a lower body that is white and gray. Sablefish has two middle-sized and evenly distributed dorsal fins along with small sharp teeth. Black cod can be caught in the Gulf of Alaska from May to June, and in Southeast Alaska from May to June and September to October every year.
